Grönholm wins but Procter takes the points at Lydden Hill

British Rallycross Championship carsFormer World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm took the win in the fifth round of the British Rallycross Championship this bank holiday weekend at Lydden Hill in front of an estimated 8000 spectators. Grönholm was chased to the flag by Kevin Procter, who claimed first place points in the championship as the best placed of the British Championship drivers.

The weekend marked the first appearance in the series of Finnish rally superstar Grönholm, who joined the Best Buy Ford team alongside British star David Binks. The event also introduced Monster Energy as associate sponsor, and featured the debut of the new ‘Rallycross Retro’ class for ‘classic’ racecars.

After intense competition with Liam Doran, Kevin Procter and David Binks, Marcus Grönholm lined up on pole with Procter and Binks completing the front row. Initially the A final was stopped after Julian Godfrey rolled his Fiesta in turn one, after landing on its wheels he was allowed to take the restart. Again Grönholm led the pack from David Binks, but it wasn’t long before Kevin Procter managed to find a way past Binks and pressure Grönholm for the lead, as the chequered flag came out there was just 0.6 seconds between first and second with Binks completing the top three.

The series now heads to Knockhill for round six on September 18.
